“One Health”: vaccinate camels to protect people from MERS

Albert Osterhaus, director of the Research Center for Emerging Infections and Zoonoses (RIZ) in Hannover, Germany, is also a vet and a strong promoter of the One Health movement, which aims to consider animals and humans together, as possible sources and vectors of emerging diseases. In his lab MERS-Cov was discovered, which has caused thousands of cases and hundreds of deaths so far, mainly in the Middle East and in Korea. He has studied a new strategy to counteract this disease, vaccinating the dromedary camels, which are the main source of human infections.

Vaccination in pregnancy: safe and effective

As it was proved during 2009 A(H1N1) pandemic, vaccinating pregnant women against flu is usually safe and can protect both mother and children. Vaccination against whooping cough is recommended as well, while vaccines with live virus, such as nasal spray flu vaccine, measles and rubella, should not be used in these cases.

The second edition of the ASSET Summer School

Dear Sir/Madame,

Within the activities of the EU-funded project ASSET, we have the pleasure to announce the Second Edition of the Summer School on Science in Society related issues in Pandemics.

As you would know, ASSET (Action plan on Science in Society related issues in Epidemics and Total pandemics) is a four-year Mobilization and Mutual Learning Action Plan (MMLAP).

Pandemics and other major infectious disease outbreaks management require a multidisciplinary approach and the ASSET Summer School will focus on:

ASSET project. Just in case

Infectious diseases outbreaks involve society on the whole. They cannot be stopped only with drugs or vaccines, especially if people don't trust governments and health authorities. To face such a challenge is thus necessary to undertake a different communication approach, which has to be bidirectional and based on different sets of expertise, including sociological and behavioural ones.
This is what ASSET project aims to do.
Just in case.

Uncertainty is common, in the first phases of an infectious outbreak. However, when facing of a serious threat to global public health, even if complete evidence is lacking, someone has to take the responsibility to push the red button that activates a chain of coordinated actions (such as cooperation among states and research on vaccines).
